Deaths in Missaukee County from August 1, 1958 to July 31, 1959 These items were gleaned from several sources and if there are any omissions, I am sorry. 1958 Aug. 5 Mrs. Jennie Geers died at the age of 76. She had been a resident of McBain and Lucas areas since a child. She was a member of the McBain Christian Reform Church. Aug. 12 Delmar Boven died, at the age of 35 years. He was a former McBain resident, but had been living in Jennings for some time. Aug. 15 Nellie Ardis died at the age of 82. She had been a resident of Missaukee County for 60 years. She was the widow of the late Sinnemon (Sim) Ardis and together they operated the Ardis General Store until 1944 when they retired. She was a member of the Lake City Presbyterian Church. Aug. 17 Charles P. (Percy) Chick died at the home of his daughter Ruth in Farmington, at the age of 78 years. He had lived in the county around 50 years and at different times had operated a bicycle shop, a general store and a Wholesale Candy Company. Aug. 25 Bessie (Hendricks) Soderquist died at the age of 44 years. She was born in Jennings and lived there for 26 years. Sept. 3 Frederick W. Schooley died, at the age of 36 years. He was a life long resident of Lake City. He enlisted in the army in World War II as an Airborn Engineer. He served in the European theater until his discharge in 1946. Sept. 3 Rodney Ellis passed away at the age of 88 years. He had lived most of his life in Aetna and Forest Twps. and was a farmer until he retired. Sept. 5 Mrs. Jennie Huttenga died at the age of 88 years. She was born in the Netherlands and, with her parents migrated to Clam Union Twp. when 11 years of age, thus being a resident for 77 years. Sept. 7 Grace Westmaas was 85 years of age and for 64 years was a resident of Richland Twp. She was apparently in good health and had gone for a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Theresa Van Houten. Shortly after arrival there suffered a stroke. She came from the Netherlands when 21 years of age. Sept. 8 Lizzie Meekhof died, at her home in Richland Twp., where she had lived for 58 years. She was 66 years of age. Sept. 8 occured the death of Bertha J. Smith, a resident of McBain for 66 years. She broke her hip a month before her death at the age of 84 years. Sept. 15 William Dorland died at the age of 77 years. He suffered a stroke a year before his death. He was a resident of the McBain area for 54 years. Sept. 23 occurred the death of Milford Tate, who was born in McBain. He had been in Grand Rapids and Holland for many years. Age was 58. Sept. 24 Mrs.Jennie Oudman, a resident of Richland Twp., died at the age of 77. She suffered a heart attack a month before her death. Sept. 28 occurred the death of Bert DeBree, who died very suddenly of a heart attack. He was a resident of Riverside Twp. for 47 years. His age 77. Oct. 5 David John Gorham of Lake Twp. died at the age of 9 years. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Gorham. Oct. 25 Henry J. Workman died very suddenly following a heart attack. He had lived in the county all of his 62 years. Oct. 29 Russell Moore died in the Veteran’s Hospital at Saginaw, at the age of 68 years. He had retired from his work as City Engineer for Lake City, for the past two years. Nov. 5 Johanna Laarman died a few days after suffering a stroke. She was a member of the Vogel Center Christian Reform Church. Nov. 5 Alonzo Eubank died, after a long illness. He was a farmer in the Twp. of Reeder for many years. He was 84 years of age and a member of the Lake City Free Methodist Church. Nov. 6 Margaret Donahue, a resident of Pioneer Township for 35 years died Nov. 6, at the age of 82 years. She had been in ill health for the past three years. Nov. 8 Jesse L Hornbaker, a resident of Pioneer Twp. for about 34 yearss died at his home in Lake City, where he had resided the past two years. He had been in ill health for sometime with a heart condition. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a memberof the Morey Community Church. His age was 48. Nov. 9 Jacob W. Doerr was found dead in his home by his brother-in-law Wm Roberts. He had been a farmer in Missaukee county for about 36 years. His age at the time of his death was 72. He was a member of The Jehovah Witnesses. Nov. 16 George Harry Mauris died, at the age of 81 years. He had lived in the township of Caldwell for 43 years. He was caretaker at the Lake City cemetery until his health failed. Nov. 26 Lydia Hill passed away, at the age of 79 years. She was born in Finland and came to this country in 1905. She had lived in Jennings and later in Reeder Township for 53 years. She had been in poor health for three years. She was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lake City. Nov. 30 Melvin McBain died at the age of 65 years. He was a native son of the city of McBain and lived there until 23 years ago, when he moved to Dearborn and worked for the Ford Motor Company. Dec. 1 David Bryan Hancock, an infant of one month was found dead in his bed. He had no apparent illness. Dec. 2 occured the death of Lafayette Powers, a farmer and resident of Aetna Township for fifty years. He farmed until illness caused him to cease. His age at death was 85 years. He was a member of the Adventist Church. Dec. 5 was the death of Jessie Goodwin of Merritt. She was a resident of the area for 48 years. Her age was 75. She was a member of the Merritt Methodist Church. Dec. 5 Ora D. Knapp died at the age of 52 years. He was a farmer and lived in West Branch Township for 50 years. Dec. 15 Cecil Miller died at the age of 83 years. He had been a resident of West Branch Township most of his life. Dec. 16 Louis Dornbos died at the age of 89. He was at one time a resident of the Falmouth vicinity. He was a member of the Vogel Center Reformed Church. Dec. 24 Helen Molhoek passed away at the age of 85. She was born in the Netherlands and came to Clam Union Township where she resided 72 years. 1959 Jan. 20 Mary Westdorp died at the age of 78 years. She had been a resident of the McBain vicinity most of her life. Jan. 31 Joe Koets died at the age of 86 years. He was a resident of the Vogel Center area. Feb. 2 Hilda Mack died at the age of 85 years. She had lived in Jennings for 55 years. She was a native of Finland. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lake City. Feb. 7 Marie Davison died at the age of 54 years and was a resident of ClamUnion Township at the time of death. Feb. 12 occured the death of Cornelius Huttenga, at the age of 74 years. He was a farmer and lived in Clam Union Township for 54 years. Feb. 24 Little Karen Quist died at the age of 4 months. Her home was Vogel Center. Mar. 1 Fred Conrad of Moddersville, died at the age of 75 years. He was a resident of that community for 47 years. Mar. 2 August Kuipers of Richland Township died at the age of 67 years. All but two of those years he was a resident of Richland Township. A farmer. Mar. 5 Grace Gernaat died at the age of 91. She was a resident of Clam Union Township for 23 years. Mar. 7 Joy Schepers died, at the age of 6 years, A resident of Falmouth. Mar. 13 Gerrit Eising was found in bed, where he had suffered a fatal heart attack during the night. It was an unexpected tragedy. He was born in Clam Union Township and lived all his life on the farm where he died. His sister Mary and brother John were with him on the farm. His age was 76 years. He was a member of the Vogel Center Christian Reformed Church. Mar. 15 Mrs. Edna Lamb died at her home in Lake City on March 15. She had lived in the Morey area since 1891, until moving to Lake City 11 years ago. She had been in ill health for several months. She was a member of the Lake City Methodist Church. Her age was 82. Mar. 21 Mrs. Eva Workman passed away after a long illness from a heart condition. She was a member of the Aetna Christian Reformed Church and was 55. Mar. 25 Johanna Sikkema died at the age of 74 years. She had lived in Clam Union for several years. She had been a patient in Mercy Hospital for several weeks. She was a member of the McBain Christian Reformed Church. Mar. 26 Hazel Bergey, a resident of West Branch Township for 16 years, died from injuries sustained in a truck-car accident. She was 54 years of age. Mar. 26 Gerrit Leenman died at the age of 92 years. He was born in the Netherlands. He came to this country when 8 years of age and lived on the same farm for 84 years. Apr. 6 Lillian Cavanagh was born in Lake City and spent her childhood and young girlhood here. After marriage they had been living in Williamston. She had gone to Arizona last January for her health. She was buried in Williamston. Apr. 6 Gerrit Bierma, a resident of the McBain area, was stricken fatally from a heart attack as he entered his home after sitting on the election board. He was a member of the McBain Christian Reformed Church and was 75 years of age. Apr. 13 Raymond Young, a resident of Moddersville vicinity, died at the age of 78 years. Apr. 15 Faye Vander Vlucht died at her home in Lucus at the age of 4 years. Apr. 24 Reka Van Houten Died, at the age of 66 years. She was a lifelong resident of the county. She was a member of the Lucas Christian Reformed Church. May. 1 Katie Boersma, died at the age of 67 years, in Lansing, Michigan. She had formerly been a resident of the McBain area. May. 10 was the date of death of Harvey Van Atta, at the age of 78 years. He was a resident of Norwich Township for 28 years. May. 22 M. C. Whittet, a resident of the McBain area, died at the age of 84 years. June. 12 occured the death of Lillian Scott, at the age of 71 years. She died after a lingering illness. She was a resident of McBain for 68 years. June. 16 occurred the death of John J. Longstreet, at the age of 70 years. He suffered a stroke and was in the hospital 11 days. He had been a resident of McBain for 45 years. He was a member of the Lucas Christian Reformed Church. June. 27 Anno Van Dyke died at the age of 91. He was born in the Netherlands and came to the U.S.A. at the age of 19. He had lived in Richland Township for 32 years and was a farmer until his retirement in 1927. He was a member of the Lucas Christian Reformed Church. June. 26 Ralph Meekhof died at the age of 76 years. He lived in Riverside Township for 66 years and was a farmer. June. 27 was the date of death of Nicholas Smith, at the age of 79 years. He was a resident of Pioneer Township for upwards of 58 years. He moved his family to the Lake City area 12 years ago. He had worked for the County Road Commission for many years, until he suffered a stroke from which he never recovered. He was a member of the Lake City M.E. Church. July. 5 Josephine Gallup died following an unnecessary auto accident. She was 69 years of age. She was born in Lake Township but she,with her family, had lived in Detroit for 25 years, but the past 7 years had been spent in McBain. July. 16 Orrin O. Dunham passed away at the age of 95 years. He had been a resident of McBain for the past 69 years. He was the first Superintendent of Schools in McBain, was the first Village President and for 33 years was a banker in his home city. He and his wife celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last October. July. 17 Clifford DuVall was a resident of Reeder Township about 20 years. He was in Schoolcraft when he died with a heart attack. He was suddenly stricken while doing carpenter work. His age was 68 years. July. 21 Mrs. Etta Goff died at the age of 89 years. She was a resident of Pioneer Township for many years. She taught school in the county. When she came here the nearest post office was Traverse City. She was the daughter of the late M. D. Richardson, who was a Civil War Veteran, a surveyor, and County Clerk and Register of Deeds in the county. Mrs. Goff had the distinction of being the second white child born in the county. July. 22 Money Pinckney died at the age of 77 years. She had lived in Lake Township since 1890, until the past few years. After the loss of her husband she was cared for by her daughter in Cadillac. July. 23 Karolina Granroth, died at the age of 82 years. She was a newcomer to our vicinity, having resided in Lake City for one year. She was born in Finland and came to America seven years ago to live with her daughter. She was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Lake City. July. 24 occured the death of William VandePol, at the age of 71 years. He suffered a stroke while picking berries. He was born on a farm in Clam Union Township where his entire life was spent. He was a member of the Calvin Christian Reformed Church. Mrs.Oliver Long passed away at her home in Butterfield, at the age of 71 years. She had been ill for several months, and was hospitalized the last two weeks. She had lived in Butterfield since 1922. She was a member of the Butterfield Nazarene Church. C. Roland Burleson was a former McBain resident. He had come to McBain in 1888. Prior to 1897 he moved to Grand Rapids, but returned that year and bought the Chronicle from Orville Dennis. He also served as postmaster in McBain from 1901 to 1914. He Moved to Los Angeles in 1917. At the time of his death he was a resident of Bloomingdale.
